Pumpkin Lentil Soup Recipe
By June Soyka Cook
This nutritious and delicious pumpkin soup has been a tradition at our family
Thanksgiving dinners for as long as I can remember. My mother made it and I've
adapted it slightly for our vegetarian palates by replacing the canned chicken
broth with boxed vegetable broth. Get the mis-matched mugs out! It's a great
crowd pleaser while waiting for dinner to be served...

so this course was a lifeline to help me focus on the spiritual aspect of life

Living With Purpose: Finding Joy in a Suffering World
By Melanie Votaw
There is war, hunger, corruption, greed, and incomprehensible pain on our
planet. How can I allow myself to feel anything positive when so many people are
suffering? But the right question to ask is, "how can I allow myself to NOT feel
positive and joyful when so many people are suffering?!" If we are all connected
to one another in a collective consciousness, as psychotherapist Carl Jung
suggested, then perhaps I have a responsibility to the world to experience as
much joy as possible!

~ Lynn's Laughter Blip for October ~
By Lynn Shaw, Laugh Therapist
|
The fall frenzy of activity escalates during the month of October. For those of
us in the changing climates and seasons, it is the time to squeeze in brisk
walks, great apples, and winterize homes and vehicles. For those in the
year-round climates, a different emphasis may be placed on this month that can
be shared universally. October is a reminder that we only have two months left
to achieve our intentions for 2004, which may perpetuate the frenzy of activity.
I suggest that we use the month of October to...

A Coping Blurb from Art: Tips for Coping with Difficulties
By Arthur Soissons-Segal, Ph.D. ~ Therapist and Brain Tumor Survivor
|
Who am I? How do I describe myself? I enjoy being with friends. I do not need to
compete with others. I connect with their stories and with the emotions they
express. I enjoy solitude at my computer and in my garden where I tend to my
cacti or smile at Eddie, my hairy white bichon-poodle who barks at the
squirrels. They tease him mercilessly until he gives up and walks away. I enjoy
connecting with my spirit, that inner part of me that reflects on my many
connections with family and friends. Felicia, my wife, worries about my health -
more than necessary, I think - but I understand that, it is one soul caring for
another. These are connections that matter to me. More than vitamin pills, these
connections bind me with love and satisfaction. I am the sum of my choices to
lead the life I live. As Thomas Merton suggested, "No man is an
island."

The Shaman Way
By Shaman Elder Maggie Wahls
|
Why study Shamanism? As a Shaman Elder, this is probably the most common
question I hear. And do you know why so many people ask it? Because we are
brought up in a society that does not have Shamanism. Worse than that, we are
brought up without community. In the old days, we were raised with a strong
community around us. We lived together, played together, grew up together and
sometimes even died together. We had elders and doctors and teachers and medical
advisors within this strong close-knit community. Part of the work for Shaman
elders would be to watch the children and discover what each child was strong
in. Then that gift (or gifts) was...

Finding Your Spiritual Soul Mate
By Rev. Laurie Sue Brockway
October Tip: Don't hate being single.
It's important to embrace being single and honor the state of not yet having a
mate. It's important to use time as a single person to prepare for being in a
relationship. Some people hate being single but the truth is, the time of
longing and yearning for love is the time to prepare for real love by assessing
your life, creating the life you want to be leading -- even if there is no one
to share it with yet -- and reflecting on past mistakes that you do not want to
recreate.

authentically with others. In the coming months, I will share a series of tips

Write A Way: Becoming Alive In Every Sense
By Sandra Lee Schubert
|
Each day we gather information through our senses. Most of it is assimilated
without much consciousness. The speed and amount of information is too much to
absorb all at once. Nonetheless, we all can become a little more aware. Times
Square, New York City is sensory overload... Since I work right in the heart of
Times Square, I have...

Dear Marty ~ Grieving Child "Begging for Pity?"
Q & A by Bereavement Counselor Marty Tousley
|
Question: Question: My
grandchild, age 7, lost her mother almost two months ago. The other children
have shown some of the "documented" signs of grief, and I understand everyone
grieves differently, but I am concerned for her, as she seems to be
"begging" for pity much of the time. She has told me more than once
that she loves all the spoiling she has been getting as a result of her mother's
death. Two days ago...

"To heal the earth through transmutation, you must connect with the
elements, the plants, the animals, and all forces of nature. You must
reestablish your connection with the web of life, seeing that you are not
separate from the rest of life, and you must see the beauty in all things. By
shifting your perception, you will change your reality."

A Green Note ~ A Visualization for Society
By Judy Morgan, Environmentalist
Take a few minutes to try to envision a society in which:
- There is minimal pollution.
- Transportation systems are designed to rely heavily on walking, biking and
renewable fuel sources.
- We have fewer but higher quality "things", all of which are reusable or
recyclable.
- Every aspect of life is ecologically in harmony.

This is the first step! If we can envision it, it is possible!

This Month's Holistic Prayer
May all beings be filled with joy and peace.
May all beings everywhere,
The strong and the weak,
The great and the small,
The mean and the powerful,
The short and the long,
The subtle and the gross.
May all beings everywhere,
Seen and unseen,
Dwelling far off or nearby,
Being or waiting to become,
May all be filled with lasting joy.
Let no one deceive another,
Let no one anywhere despise another,
Let no one out of anger or resentment
Wish suffering on anyone at all.
Just as a mother with her own life
Protects her child, her only child, from harm,
So within yourself let grow
A boundless love for all creatures.
Let your love flow outward through the universe,
To its height, its depth, its broad extent,
A limitless love, without hatred or enmity.
Then as you stand or walk,
Sit or lie down,
As long as you are awake,
Strive for this with a one-pointed mind,
Your life will bring heaven to earth.
