Laughter and The Healing Process
By Lynn Shaw, Laugh Therapist
In my experience as a psychotherapist, I have had the privilege of listening to thousands of stories. People entrust me with their innermost thoughts, desires, joys, and concerns. Some of the stories move me to tears and some to laughter. What continually amazes me is how much laughter is a part of the healing process for my clients.
I can count on laughter entering the counseling session within the first 10 minutes of each session. After the preliminary comments, I move into the assessment phase of the session and inevitably, laughter comes from a quip, an observation, an exchange. Tension is reduced and a more relaxed environment occurs allowing for a deeper exchange of information and ideas.
What does it mean when people laugh?
When I began to study the therapeutic value of laughter, I became more aware of when I heard laughter. My clients would often laugh after a statement of fear, embarrassment, or anger. When my clients laughed, I learned to listen to the content of the statements made prior to the laugh because therein was the source of work for that individual.
What is a laughing heart?
A laughing heart is a heart that hears what is not being said. When you are present with another person and laughter occurs between you, your hearts have laughed together. When you are alone and have a moment of clarity and your eyes light up, your mouth forms that "Ohhh" sound and you want to shout, "Yes!" Your heart is laughing. And, when you have a laughing heart, you have a healing heart.
